About Spy-da
The story behind the SPL Mastering chain — built to protect the emotion, energy and identity of the record.
I built SPL Mastering because I refused to let the emotion be mastered out of my music.
Just before lockdown, I reached a point where I was no longer happy handing my records over and simply hoping the mastering would come back right. I had spent years producing music with a particular feeling, balance and energy — but after mastering, I could hear parts of that identity disappearing.
Frequencies that were important to the emotion of the record were being heavily cut or removed. The music could come back technically controlled, but to me it no longer felt the same. The warmth, movement, depth and emotional connection I had worked into the production were being changed in ways I did not want.
That became the turning point. Rather than continue accepting somebody else's idea of what my music should sound like, I started building my own mastering system inside Spy-da Productions — one where the first question was not simply “how loud can we make it?”, but “what does this record need to keep its feeling?”
The Patch Bay Became The Laboratory
The patch bay gave me the freedom to stop thinking of the outboard as one permanent signal path. I could change the order of processors, bypass equipment completely, compare different routes and listen to what each change actually did to the music.
Listen, Patch, Compare, Repeat
I spent time experimenting with different combinations until I understood where each piece of equipment helped, where it did too much, and where leaving something untouched sounded better. Some tracks needed more weight, some more openness, some tighter control, and some only needed the smallest movement.
A Chain For The Track — Not The Other Way Around
That process became the SPL philosophy. The equipment is there to serve the record. The chain can be shaped around the track so the low end, mids, transients, stereo image and top end are treated according to what the music actually needs — while preserving the emotion that made the track work in the first place.
